Haigh-Black Funeral Home, Ormond Beach. MRS. GRACE V. JOSEPH, 81, 16 Terrace Gardens Presbyterian Home, Lakeland, died Aviation Association Friday described recent wire service stories indicating that an Ocala celery food inspector died as a result of exposure to air-delivered pesticide sprays.

Dead is Earl A. Reitz, who had been inspecting celery in a field near Zellwood in Orange County and who later collapsed after driving back to his motel in Zellwood. A death certificate, signed May 24 by Dr. Gertrude Warner at Monroe Memorial Hospital in Ocala, according to wire stories, attributed death to 'pesticide poisoning complicated by emphysema following an autopsy. PAT GRAY, president of the Agriculture Aviation Association, said here Friday Associated Press stories which appeared June 6 and 7 are "misleading and peppered with half truths.

For example, I conducted an investigation on my own after reading the stories. I had one of our members phone Dr. Warner and she denied she had performed any autopsy or that she had done so. Mr. Reitz's body has been sent to Miami and I understand an autopsy is to be performed there," Gray said.

Gray conceded that parathion the chemical cited in the news stories as a contributing cause of Reitz's death is a "highly toxic pesticide, necessitating the wearing of complete protective equipment by those who handle it, including pilots. But it is also a very symptomatic poison and exposure to it results in immediate and easily identifiable symptoms dizziness, dilation of the pupils and stomach spasms. "I understand there were 50 to 100 pickers working in that celery field. If they had got a dose of parathion there would have been plenty of symptoms apparent. The wire stories made no mention of anyone but Mr.

Reitz receiving any ill effects whatsoever," Gray said. DESCRIBING agricultural aviation as "the most legislative industry in the state of Florida," Gray took issue with the statement attributed to state Agriculture Commissioner Doyle Conner that "Florida had controlled aerial spraying of pesticides." Producing a copy of the Florida Pesticide Law of May 1971 and citing the federal pesticides application act enacted by congress in October, 1972, Gray explained that aerial spraying of insecticides is regulated both by the state Department of Agriculture and the federal aviations agency. The controls, he said, "are tight."
